Because breaking up is hard to do...

It really is hard to leave your employer. You've built rapport! You have memories! All of that won't go away. If you'd like to make the transition happen smoothly, it's useful to have a couple of scripts prepared.

Counter Offers

If you go to other recruiters' websites, you might see a lot of very scary information about the hazards of taking a counter offer. We don't know how much of that we believe, so we don't include it.

We do know how upset an employee would be if an employer withdrew an offer after it had been extended. The counter offer is the flip side of that scenario.

You must make a decision that's best for you. One way or another, we will fill the position, so you have to make the best decision for your life.

If you're approached with a counter offer you do not plan to accept, plan what you will say. Our advice would be something like:

"I am deeply flattered that you think so highly of me. The change I'm making isn't motivated by money. This opportunity is the right move for my career and I know I would regret passing on this opportunity. Thank you again for the opportunity to work with you."

Resignation Letters

This step is surprisingly simple. Here's the letter we recommend. If you want a .doc or .docx of this file, shoot us a note.

Today’s date

Subject: Letter of resignation

Adam,

I have decided to leave Widgets International and have accepted a position with another firm. It is with some regret that I inform you of this decision, as I have enjoyed my time with Widgets and wish it continued success. However, I am confident that the new role represents a positive step in my career.

My last day on the job will be at least two weeks away from today’s date. Again, it has been a pleasure working with the company.

Please let me know how I can ease the transition.

Yours sincerely,
